Why Wicker Furniture is Durable

The outdoor wicker furniture of today is a far cry from the wicker furniture your grandma had. The antique wicker patio furniture was made of natural materials, such as bamboo, rattan, willow, or reed. These materials will break down in the weather. For this reason, wicker furniture had to be brought inside during the winter, and had to be under a covered patio if it was outside in the summer. The fibers would eventually crack and splinter because of the conditions.
The new age of outdoor furniture is here. With new advancements in material, wicker is now durable enough to be left outside. The new fibers are made of a poly-propylene resin. Colors are added in the manufacture of the fibers while they are still in a liquid form, so many choices in finishes are available. These finishes will not crack, peel, or chip off like painted wicker furniture. UV rays will not harm the new wicker, so the outdoor wicker can be left in direct sunlight. You can even place this new wicker by the pool if you'd like to.
Traditional wicker furniture was made using natural fibers for the weave and natural woods for the frame. So even the frames break down! The modern frames are usually made of powder coated aluminum which is non-corrosive.
Outdoor wicker comes in a variety of weaves. The varieties range from simple basket weave designs to elaborate patterns. The choices available today in wicker furniture is so extensive that you will have a hard time picking out just one that you like.
